​The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has defended the pegging of 120 as minimum cut-off marks for university admission. The decision, which was reached at a stakeholders’ policy meeting in Abuja, has generated controversy with many universities rejecting the marks. JAMB’s Head of Information Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement yesterday in Abuja, said the board would not be deterred and would continue to support policies that would bring Nigeria’s education out of the woods. He explained that previous cut off marks were never strictly followed by most institutions. Dr. Benjamin said most universities failed to fill their admission quota in the last 10 years. The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of Lagos State Police Command have arrested four members of two notorious fraud syndicates operating in Ikeja and environs, Vanguard reports. Members of the syndicates, three males and a female, were arrested in two separate cases of fraud last Thursday and Saturday in Ikeja and Oshodi, respectively. The first group, comprising Chinasa Sunday, 44, and Osadebe Aigbe, 30, were arrested in Ikeja after several days of being under surveillance of the undercover team for defrauding a lady of N85,000. Their victim, Grace Enitan, had reported at the RRS Headquarters that a syndicate of four men picked her up in a taxi and duped her of N85,000, while she was heading to Ikeja. According to reports, Pastor Tony Obo, of the God's Commandment Ministry (aka Obot Uboho), was arrested by men of the Cross River state police command, on suspicions of murder. The pastor was accused of buying a baby from kidnappers and eventually killing the child for ritual purposes. A 42-year-old man from Southlea Park in Zimbabwe who had an argument with his wife has reportedly burnt down his properties before killing himself. According to Zim Eye, the man identified as Patrick Bangani drank a concoction of sulphuric acid and pesticides after ramming his car into the family house before dousing it with petrol and setting it ablaze. One of his children, an 11-year-old daughter, who witnessed her father taking the poisonous concoction escaped through the window of one of the bedrooms, while her other siblings were said to be playing in the neighborhood. Onyinyechi Akunne, has been arraigned in an Ikeja court for allegedly killing her 35-year-old husband, Abuchi Akunne, with a kitchen knife over a lottery ticket of Premier Lotto Ltd also known as “Baba Ijebu”. According to her prosecutor, Mrs C.K Tuiyi-Carena, 29-year-old Onyinyechi who committed the offence on March 28, 2015 at her residence located at No. 85, Idimu Road, Ejigbo, a surbub of Lagos, was pregnant at that time. “On the day of the alleged murder, Onyinyechi was preparing a meal while Abuchi was sitting on a chair in their home looking at his ‘Baba Ijebu’ lottery tickets. Angered by her husband’s action, Onyinyechi scolded him for his love for gambling and a fight ensued between them. She took the kitchen knife she was using to cut vegetables and stabbed her husband fatally in the chest. A 50-year-old Ghanaian man from Asuboi-Wawase in Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region, has landed his 8-year-old daughter at the hospital after attacking her with a cutlass. Two siblings who have been identified on Facebook as Anne Marie James and her brother Melvin James, have been linked to family stabbing case, which left them dead and also left their mum seriously injured. According to the Police who were called to the flat in Merry Hill, Wolverhampton, at 9.45am yesterday after receiving a 999 call about a domestic incident from someone inside, the incident by Melvin. 25-year-old Ms. Hope Usang, has been arrested after being linked to arms leased out to robbers in Cross River State. A 17-year-old girl, Fatima Baba, has appealed to the Niger Child Right Protection Agency to dissolve her one-month-old marriage. Fatima, who is married to 35-year-old Salihu Mohammed, told the agency on Tuesday in Minna, that she was no more in love with her husband, a resident of Shaba Legbo village in Gbako Local Government Area of the state. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday arraigned one Dairo Seun before Justice A. B. Mohammed of the FCT High Court, Jabi, Abuja for a N11,346,000 fraud. The Ministry of Finance had petitioned the EFCC in February 2016 requesting for “payroll fraud investigation”. It was part of efforts to unravel various techniques used by fraudsters to defraud the Nigerian government by way of ghost workers. Seun, who goes by various aliases including Momoh Hassan, Umar Musa and Umar Obele Musa, is facing an eight-count charge bordering on theft, criminal breach of trust and advance fee fraud. He is alleged to have connived with one Saliu Olashola (aka Nokia), to commit the fraud between 2013 and 2017. He is accused of stealing N5,673,503.64 from the Federal Government by creating fictitious accounts for salaries and allowances, using his various aliases, an offence contrary to Section 287 of the Penal Code Act, Laws of Federation 2004. An Okitipupa Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State on Wednesday remanded four men in prison over an alleged theft of a Skybite 100 Arms vehicle battery belonging to the state Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi. The accused – Dare Akinlade, 19; Pius Macauley, 22; Samuel Baniah, 22 and Segun Ilesanmi, 25, are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, felony and stealing. The accused, of no fixed addresses, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Magistrate, Mr Banji Ayeomoni, ordered that they should be remanded at the Okitipupa Prisons until March 10 for further hearing and determination of their bail. The Prosecutor, Insp. Zedekiah Orogbemi, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 3 at about 12 noon at the deputy governor’s residence in Okitipupa, Ondo State. According to a statement by the EFCC’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, Dr Omale is facing a 7-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N5.6million. He and his accomplices who are currently on the run allegedly connived and fraudulently defrauded one Bola Akintola of the said sum under the pretext of having a mystical power to deliver her of untimely death. The offence is contrary to Section 8 (a) and 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act. Police at Achimota in Ghana have arrested 43 drug peddlers who are suspected to be perpetrating robbery activities in the area.  The suspects, 40 of whom are men and 3 women,  were caught during a raid on Saturday in the ghettos and slums located in the community. According to Ghana Web report, some of them were caught in the act smoking substances suspected to be marijuana, while others were in possession of the material. Confirming their arrest, Commander of the Mile 7 District Police Command, Supt. Iddrisu Tanko, said: ‘Their activities are actually taking a toll on the community, in that we record pockets of people being attacked in isolated areas in the community. People have their Ipads, phones, and bags being snatched from them at knife or gun point. ‘Those we’ve arrested have given the indication that they are people who are normally around these areas where dry substances suspected to be Indian hemp is normally sold,’ he said.

The Police in Niger on Wednesday arrested a 45-year-old-man, over alleged rape of his three-year-old stepdaughter. The suspect was arrested in Kundu, a village in Rafi Local Government Area of the state. Police Inspector Abdullahi Mayaki, attached to the state Child Rights Protection Agency, said that the mother of the girl, Malama Fatima Bawa, reported the matter to the agency. He said that the suspect, however, denied the allegation during investigation, claiming that he only intervened whenever his wife beat the girl. But Bawa had told the agency that she caught her husband sexually abusing her daughter after he approached her for sex at night and she refused him. Justice Adegboye Gbolagunte of an Ibadan High Court has sentenced to death by hanging, a 200 level student of Lead City University, Ibadan, Moshood Owolabi pictured above. Moshood was sentenced to death after the court found him guilty of stabbing one Seun Kolawole, a fellow student, to death two years ago. Prosecuting counsel, and a Deputy Director in the Oyo State Ministry of Justice, A. Olawale, told the court that Moshood who is a student in the department of Physical and Health Education stabbed Kolawole with a broken bottle in the neck, following a misunderstanding between him and the deceased. The offence is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38 Vol. II Law of Oyo State 2000. Justice Gbolagunte said the evidence provided before the court proved beyond doubt that Moshood was guilty of the crime. He thereafter sentenced him to death by hanging. An Abuja Magistrate Court in Bwari has ordered the remand of a young boy for allegedly impregnating a 16-year-old Junior Secondary School student. The young boy’s mother was also accused of threatening the girl if she failed to abort the pregnancy. The father of the girl told the court that the incident had forced the girl out of school. He said the pregnancy was first suspected by the mother of the girl before it was later confirmed at a hospital. He said the girl told her mother that she was impregnated by the accused, one Japhet Adams, who used to lure her into their compound any time her mother was away and had sexual intercourse with her. The father of the girl further told the court that when the young boy was informed of the pregnancy, he accepted responsibility but his mother stood against it and she threatened the girl to abort it with a warning that if she failed to do so, she would curse her and the unborn child. Police at Achimota in Ghana have arrested 43 drug peddlers who are suspected to be perpetrating robbery activities in the area.  The suspects, 40 of whom are men and 3 women,  were caught during a raid on Saturday in the ghettos and slums located in the community. According to Ghana Web report, some of them were caught in the act smoking substances suspected to be marijuana, while others were in possession of the material. Confirming their arrest, Commander of the Mile 7 District Police Command, Supt. Iddrisu Tanko, said: ‘Their activities are actually taking a toll on the community, in that we record pockets of people being attacked in isolated areas in the community. People have their Ipads, phones, and bags being snatched from them at knife or gun point. ‘Those we’ve arrested have given the indication that they are people who are normally around these areas where dry substances suspected to be Indian hemp is normally sold,’ he said.

For 11 years, Emmanuel Nwobilo AKA Ukunwayin, a native of Umuwankwo area of Abia State, allegedly operated criminal activities of kidnapping, scam and r*pe. By his own admission, each time he was caught by the police, the case never got to court as he always found ways of getting himself off the hook with money. But when he landed in the net of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of Abia State Police Command recently, he was made to chronicle his crime activities on camera. In a video posted online by an operative of SARS in the state, Nwobilo, explained that since 2006 when he had been actively involved in crime, he had r*ped up to seven ladies. Uche Udoma was arrested by operatives of the Anti-kidnapping Unit attached to the Umuahia Central Police Station, who responded to a distress call from one Dr. Chioma Okoli, whose house at Amakama Housing Estate in Umuahia, was burgled by the suspect. The suspect, who said he’s a panel beater, revealed that he stole so he could he pay his son’s hospital bill as no job has been coming for a long time. That was what led me into stealing.
